Trial of Elder Israel Dammon: A look into early Adventist meetings

Posted on Updated on

There is nothing better than to read the first hand accounts of witness to events. Original sources help to eliminate the possibility of misquoting or misinterpretation and allows the reader to see and judge for themselves the events as close as possible to when they transpired.

Many of us are aware how Seventh-Day Adventism loves to romanticizes and fabricate lore about its early leaders and especially their disobedience to the Lord’s command not to set times of when He would return. Rather than disavowing their false prophetess claim and subsequent cover up attempts, it calls her disobedience the “The Great Disappointment”. However in this day and age thanks to the Internet we can actually find images of news articles and read first hand of their depravity and the harm they caused many people.  See The Birth of Adventism, the not so Great Disappointment (Captured in the Newspapers)

In this particular post we get a good look at one of the most infamous trials that revolved around the early Adventist group meetings. The descriptions of the events show that it took on the fervor or modern charismatic movements and swingers style soirees!

What the reader will find interesting is the court’s sworn witnesses testimonies of an 18 year old Ellen Harmon involved in these meetings already claiming to have visions and also justifying her damning of certain meeting attendees whom she did not like. We also read about James White and other men, some of who would go into a back bedroom with other women to help them “exercise”.

Here attached is a copy of the original “Trial of Elder Israel Dammon” that SDA cult probably wished was lost forever. You can only find it online as a transcript but I was able to obtain a copy of the original paper it from a University in Maine Orono and give it here as Public Domain material.

The entire article in readable .pdf format can be obtained here.

Ben Carson, Adventism and their Prophetess’ Prophetic Visions on Israel

A Section from a November 7, 1939, Article from an Official Publication of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, “Signs of the Times”. Among Adventstim’s devotees is the belief that the cult has replaced the Jewish Nation as Spiritual Israel.

Two interesting quotes I have encountered from Seventh-Day Adventism.  Quote’s citations are included.

With Dr. Ben Carson–who is a Seventh-Day Adventist–is running for the office of POTUS these teachings have me raising my eyebrows. With the situation being explosive in the Middle East between Hamas and Israel what is–

  1. Dr. Carson’s position and view on Israel?
  2. Specifically what does he see as the significance/importance of the Israeli and the US relationship both politically AND religiously?
  3. Does he believe these statements to be in error?
  4. Why hasn’t the US Press begun to ask Ben these questions?

One might be tempted to dismiss these things as isolated quotes that are on the fringe.  All more the reason to simply ask the poignant questions.

“I was pointed to some who are in the great error of believing that it is their duty to go to Old Jerusalem; and think they have a work to do there before the Lord comes. . . . I saw that Satan had greatly deceived some in this thing. . . . I also saw that Old Jerusalem never would be built up; and Satan was doing his utmost to lead the minds of the children of the Lord into these things now in the gathering time. . . .” — EGW, Early Writings Page 75

“[Jews] as a people, they have long ceased to have any significance. For the same reason, Palestine will never become the home of the Jews; there would be no purpose in it.” –H. Brown, Signs of the Times, November 7, 1939, Page 7.

Despite Jerusalem being a thriving metropolis today. In paragraph 3 there is a quote from one vision that the Seventh-Day Adventist Prophetess had concerning Israel and the Jews. Notice that her vision was false claiming that Old Jerusalem would never be built-up and that Satan was the architect of this idea.

Why Christians go to church on Sunday

faf2011b1a1J. Mark Martin is the Senior Pastor of Calvary Community Church, a grace oriented fellowship of over 12,000 believers located in Phoenix, Arizona. Pastor Mark grew up in Medford, Oregon, and later attended college in Northern California at Pacific Union College where he graduated with a B.A. in theology. While attending college, he met his wife to be, Leslie, and they now have three children. Pastor Mark has been teaching God’s grace for over 25 years.

Pastor Mark was raised a Seventh-day Adventist, a legalistic denomination that emphasizes salvation by works and absolute adherence to the doctrines of their false prophetess. Mark started pastoring during college and was forced to resign when he began to teach the grace of God. Mark’s experience under legalism gives his ministry a unique emphasis on the love and grace of God, which is demonstrated by Jesus’ death on the cross for our sins.

Ben Carson’s prophetess and religion teaches his cult will be persecuted by those who don’t attend church on Saturday.

With an estimated 118 million Christians who attend church on Sunday how should we look at a possible Seventh-Day Adventist President?  It’s interesting that Ben Carson chose to speak on this issue in Australia and not in the United States.

In the last US Presidential Election, Mitt Romney a Mormon was questioned about his religion.  In the eyes of many Evangelical Christians, Mormonism is viewed as a cult.  Like Mormonism, Seventh-Day Adventism has its share of cultic issues–

  • A Prophetess, who is believed to be inspired by God, it also
  • published and sells its version of a Bible called the “Clear Word”,
  • has several non-Orthodox teachings that one will not find support for in Scripture and
  • has a replacement theology regarding the Jews and Israel, which is problematic in a time like this with Israel as America’s closest Middle East ally.

One of these teachings is about the US and The National Sunday Law.  According to Seventh-Day Adventists, when the US enacts this law it will become criminal to go to church on Saturday–which is what devotees of Seventh-Day Adventism choose to do.  Will the US National Press ask Ben Carson about his belief on these issues?

Based on the visions of their Prophetess Ellen G White Adventism teaches that the Roman Catholic Pope changed Sabbath from Saturday to Sunday, and all those who worship on Sunday will have the Mark of the Beast.  Something that is widely understood among members of the cult but not openly discussed with outsiders is the cult’s belief that Christians (those who go to church on Sunday) will eventually kill and murder Seventh-Day Adventists over their choice to go to church on Saturday.

See my Post, “Will Christians really kill Adventists over the Sabbath?

One should ask if this is the worldview that is held by a possible Candidate for the Office of the President of the United States what will he do to–

  • Create as reality a National Sunday Law or
  • Try to prevent any religious laws that would protect the share of the 118 Million Christians within the US borders?
  • If a President believes that Christians will one day try to kill him and his fellow cult members over their choice of going to church on Saturday will paranoia play a part of the
    • reason for laws or
    • decisions from the White House?

Seventh-Day Adventism believes the Roman Catholic claim of authority to change Shabbat!

Image Posted on Updated on

Isn’t it interesting when you realize that no other group of people denounces the Roman Catholics more strongly than does Seventh-Day Adventism? She pronounces them as deceivers, false teachers, perverters of history. As for

all the claims of the Roman Catholics she repudiates them as worthless. Ahh but there is one claim that Seventh-Day Adventism simply cherishes and has made it the saddle of her prize hobby-horse. that is the Roman Catholic Claim that it had the authority to change Sabbath.

What a stark contrast to everything Adventism says about the Roman Catholics. This claim Adventism holds up proudly, she publishes it to the world better than the Roman Catholics themselves. Adventism happily accepts the Roman Catholic’s mere assertion that it had the authority do it and to Adventism, well it settles the question beyond dispute. Isn’t that interesting?

Seventh-Day Adventism has no other proof to support their claim that the Pope changed the Sabbath to Sunday other than the Pope’s own claim that he could.

Notice that the Roman Catholics offer no proof to support their claim that they had the authority to change the day other then its assertion that they did and left it there. At this point, Adventism gladly accepts this claim without any other proof! Well, then we should ask which other claims does Adventism also swallow hook, line and sinker.

Consider these other claims made by The Roman Catholic Church:

  1. The Roman Catholic Church is the only true Church.
  2. St. Peter was the first Pope of the Holy Catholic Church.
  3. The present Pope of Rome is the lineal divinely appointed successor of St. Peter.
  4. The Pope of Rome is the Vicar of Jesus Christ upon earth.
  5. The Pope is infallible.
  6. The Pope holds the keys to heaven.
  7. All, including Adventists, outside of the Catholic Church are heretics.
  8. Protestants are indebted to Catholics for the Holy Scriptures as it is given to them.
  9. Catholic priests have the authority to forgive sins.
  10. The Roman Catholic Church changed the Sabbath from the seventh day to Sunday, the first day.

The Roman Catholic Church strongly claims all these ten items. What does Seventh-Day Adventism say to these assertions? She quickly denies all the first nine; she call them all lies, she is clear to say they Roman Catholics’ claim is without any foundation in fact. But then why is it when she comes to the tenth one, regarding the change of the Sabbath, Adventism fall over itself to accept every word of this as the infallible truth? Concerning this one claim, Adventism says, “It settles the question beyond dispute. See the Catholic Church is owning up to it which proves it did really do the job!!

Consider this illustration: Adventists bring their chief witness into court. But when he is sworn they acknowledge that nine-tenths of his testimony is a lie, it is perjury. But wait that one-tenth of what their witness swears to is TRUE. Unbelievably on this claim they rest their case believing them have won their case! Selah!

Any judge would quickly throw out of a court such testimony as worthless, yet this is the witness, and THE ONLY witness, Adventists can produce saying that the Roman Church changed the Sabbath. See any of their publications on this point.

How quickly Adventism teaches it members and those gullible enough to be absent themselves from critical thought that this is a rational and acceptable way of discerning the truth.

The Gospel: A 4 Point Primer for Seventh-Day Adventists

Image Posted on Updated on

In talking with many Seventh-Day Adventists and looking back at my upbringing  I have surmised most of us were full of the Great Controversy (SDA Gospel), The Three Angels Message, Ellen G White, the Sabbath and Law, and we even learned Daniel & Revelation Symbols.  We did this ALL even before understanding WHAT IS THE GOSPEL!  Ask an Adventist what it is that the Apostles preached to the lost and you will get blank stares or even ridicule.  But let’s honestly assume none of us as Seventh-Day Adventists  truly heard The Gospel.  Well, let’s change that!  Here is THAT GOOD NEWS!

There is ONLY ONE GOSPEL. If you have not yet received the Gospel of Jesus Christ, it is this–

  1. We are ALL accountable to God, “for the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men. Romans 1:18 (NASB)
  2. We are all already indicted and convicted by The Righteous God, “we have already charged that both Jews and Greeks are all under sin. As it is written, “There is none righteous, not even one;Romans 3:9-19 (NASB)
  3. However, there is a way out. It is faith in Jesus Christ ONLY not the Sabbath, not our ability or hope we can keep The Law, or belonging to Seventh-Day Adventism [all nonsense]. Rather Scripture says, “But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested. . . Through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe we are . . . Justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ JesusRomans 3:21-24 (NASB)
  4. You, we, all who Believe in Jesus as the Savior, our PERSONAL savior can be included, “But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness,Romans 4:5 (NASB)

There is NO Mention of the worshipping Saturday or trying hard to keep it. Jesus ALREADY KEPT IT ALL, and He kept it perfectly, He kept all the LAW! Not just one law or four laws or Ten Laws, NO HE KEPT ALL the LAW PERFECTLY for those who believe in Him. This is the Gospel it is GOOD NEWS for those who believe and receive His Truth.

Adventist you don’t have to wallow in concern that you THINK you have lived a life that was good enough or HOPE you will enter Heaven.  You can KNOW you are SAVED (1 John 5:11-12), quit living for the LAW and falling short.  Accept Christ’s finished work of fulfilling the requirements of Law as your righteousness, why?  Because Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes (Romans 10:4).      There are no if’s, but’s or what abouts, It is what was written.  No man can judge you, NO MAN!

John 5:16-24 New American Standard Bible

For this reason the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because He was doing these things on the Sabbath.  But He answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I Myself am working.”  For this reason therefore the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.

Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner. For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing; and the Father will show Him greater works than these, so that you will marvel. For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom He wishes.  For not even the Father judges anyone, but He has given all judgment to the Son, so that all will honor the Son even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.

“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.

Faith Story: Elaina Matthews’ Testimony

Video Posted on

Elaina Matthews grew up in a multi-generational, conservative Seventh-day Adventist family. She was homeschooled through many of her grade school years and also attended Daystar Christian School, an Adventist elementary school in Pueblo, Colorado. She graduated from Campion Academy, an Adventist boarding high school. After discovering that she would not be able to afford to attend an Adventist college, she moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, so that she could attend a university near an Adventist college. While there, she began to read her Bible without also reading Ellen White, and for the first time discovered that what she had been taught growing up Adventist did not agree with the Bible. Laini met and fell in love with the true Jesus of the Bible and became a Christian, leaving the Adventist church at the age of 21. She still lives in Lincoln, Nebraska, and will soon return to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to finish her bachelor’s degree in vocal music. She sings in the chorus at Opera Omaha and has a passion for music. Her church home is Lincoln Berean Church, and she also participates in the music ministry at Eastridge Presbyterian Church. Laini started a ministry for Adventist young adults in conjunction with Life Assurance Ministries that is a spin-off from their Bible Studies for Adventists website. Bible Studies for Adventists: Young Adults is an open Facebook group that seeks to compare what is taught in the Collegiate Quarterly with Scripture. Laini writes commentaries on the Collegiate Quarterly material and moderates the group.
